PHOTOCRAFT – an Free Photoshop Alternative
PhotoCraft is a free and open-source image editing application built as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop. Developed by the ArtCraft team and written in the Rust programming language, it offers Photoshop-like features such as layers, masks, text tools, brushes, and PSD/PSB file support.

- Broad File Format Support: Opens and saves PSD and PSB files while preserving layers. It also supports RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale color modes with 8/16/32-bit depth.
- AI-Oriented Infrastructure: Over 500 commands can be executed via the UI, command line, or a JSON channel. With MCP (Model Context Protocol) support, it allows AI agents to drive the software.
- Hardware Acceleration: Uses Metal, Vulkan, DirectX 12, and WebGPU for canvas rendering.
⚠️ Things to Know
- Under Development: PhotoCraft is currently in early alpha, with limitations in text layout, brush capabilities, and plugin compatibility.
- Not Yet Ready for Professional Use: According to the project team’s own assessment, PhotoCraft’s readiness for a professional user’s daily workflow is around 25-35%.
